Preserving the House

Geertjan Visser asked architect Aldo Van Eyck to design a house in a wooded area in Retie. The house was built between 1974 and 1976, and Visser lived there until his death in 2010.

A relative of Visser inherited the house, but found it in a poor condition due to late and poor maintenance. The new owners carried out a thorough renovation and restored almost everything to its original state. The house and the garden have been intensively maintained for 13 years. It is particularly remarkable how the whole is in such good condition, even Visser's original curtains are still in perfect condition. Nevertheless, the owners decide to sell the property in 2023.

The new owner wants to continue the restoration and conservation. He wants to preserve this architectural gem for the future, in the best conditions possible and with due respect for the original design of the architect and the client. Over the next five years, the house will undergo the necessary renovation to meet today's ecological standards and the garden will also be shaped to accommodate future exhibitions.

The Visser House is not open to the public. This website is there to offer students and interested parties the opportunity to admire Aldo Van Eyck's design through a Virtual tour and photos. We would like to make the architect, but also the client, more visible to a larger audience.
